Quite a lot has transpired since my "Focus on the Case, Not the Race" post of April 6, 2012. It is obvious now that trying to focus on the case is impossible because of the race of the two individuals involved. It's because of the race of Zimmerman and Martin that this was even news in the first place. I am not going to claim to be neutral on this matter, but I will try to think outside the box.
Zimmerman did not have to pursue Martin and I believe he wouldn't have if he didn't have a gun. Zimmerman did not decide to take Martins life until he was getting his ass kicked, most likely. I do not think Zimmerman thought his life was in danger either when he fired the gun. The gunshot was his "last word" in a physical pissing match between two men. I doubt Martin felt that he needed to kill someone following him around a neighborhood. If you go into a fight with nothing but your bare hands, it's safe to assume that your intention is not to kill the other person, but to teach them a damn good lesson for messing with you in the first place. If you go into a fight with a gun, it's safe to assume that there is a good chance you'll have the control to end the fight when you see fit. My opinion of Zimmerman after all of this: he was a pussy with a gun who bit off more than he could chew when he brought a gun to a skittle fight. Although I grimace at pictures of him and his family smiling after the verdict was read, I have moved on. You have to be critical of how you judge people you don't know on events you were not present to witness.
Now for the other side of the coin; WHERE THE FUCK DID ALL OF THESE EXPERTS IN LAW AND JUSTICE COME FROM!!! Justice does not mean that you get your way. If the verdict was Guilty, the other half of the country would be crying out saying that this is an injustice. Justice is the fact that this went to trial in the first place. Justice is NOT what the Jury decides, Justice is the fact that the Jury was there in the first place. Keep in mind that the previous Police Chief wanted to let Zimmerman go on the Stand Your Ground law. Am I the only one that appreciates the fact that Zimmerman had to stand trial in the first place?
Let's also focus on why this shit was even in the news. A White/Hispanic Man shot and killed a Black Minor. You have to admit that if Trayvon was killed by me that night, this would not be on the news. When you think of it, isn't that really the problem??? If I killed him, Martin would have just been another statistic. A half Hispanic Male killed him...now it's headline news. The point that I'm trying to make is EVEN IF THIS WAS A BLACK ON BLACK CRIME...SHOULDN'T IT STILL BE HEADLINE NEWS? It is a bigger problem than vigilante neighborhood watchmen hunting down young black youths. The only reason why this is a big deal is because it didn't happen between people of the same race.
My Mom didn't take me to many R rated movies, but she did take me to see Boyz N The Hood (a couple of days after my 12th birthday). When your Mother insists that she takes you to an R rated movie at that age, it's for a reason! This movie taught me the importance of walking away from a fight. If you've seen this movie you'll know what I'm talking about. As hard as it is to swallow, as much as you want to kick the other guys ass, most of the time the real Man is the one who walks away. THE MAN WHO WANTS TO LIVE WALKS AWAY FROM THE FIGHT. Pride is the biggest instigator in fatal physical confrontations.
"Pride hurts, it never helps." -Marcellus Wallace from Pulp Fiction
I'm doing what most people should be doing, I'm not letting this ruin my day. I'm going to try to do what most people should be trying to do, I'm going to move on and find a way to learn from this. My children will read about this in history books (more like History E-Books)...and I will let them make their own decisions too.
If Martin was really the bad guy: I wish Zimmerman would have stayed in the car and did what the dispatcher told him.
If Zimmerman is really the bad guy: I wish Martin would have continued to walk to his home, approach the porch, and before walking in looks back at Zimmerman in his truck, give him the finger, and then walk inside to enjoy his Skittles and Arizona tea.
